- Fans are convinced that Harry Styles was just cast as Prince Harry in the new Little Mermaid remake.
- Here’s the deal on where the rumors came from and if they’re true or not.
IDK if there’s ever been a Disney movie that’s generated as much buzz as this new Little Mermaid remake. First, there was a bunch of controversy over Halle Bailey being cast as Ariel. For the record: We should only be so lucky as to have an Ariel like her, and all those haters should deactivate their Twitter accounts.
And now that that big casting is out of the way, everyone has turned their attention to who’s going to play her love interest, Prince Eric. Apparently, people are convinced Harry Styles was cast as the other lead. But don’t get your hopes up because those reports are probably bogus and will only raise your heart rate for no reason. Here’s the deal:
So, earlier this afternoon, a website called The DisInsider, which fancies itself an “exclusive daily” source of Disney news reported the casting news. They also tweeted it out, but their Twitter account is unverified so that definitely raises some eyebrows. Without quoting any legitimate sources, the site wrote, “The DisInsider has been recently informed that Styles has officially signed on to the project.”
After that, mass panic ensued and everyone started tweeting the news. And I mean everyone. It became a Twitter trending topic almost instantly and even clothing store Pretty Little Thing and movie theaters tweeted—but later deleted—saying the casting was confirmed even though neither Disney nor Harry said anything of the sort.
It’s likely this news caught on so fast because of plain ol’ wishful thinking and the fact that there have been rumors that Harry will be Prince Eric for at least a month now.
But all the excitement quickly turned sour when tweets started getting deleted and a CBS Interactive rep tweeted, “The hunt for Prince Eric continues, Harry Styles isn’t confirmed….yet.”
So that’s where we’re at now….still longing for the days that we get to see Harry Styles in a billowy shirt on a ship. Fingers crossed that “yet” means some good news is on the horizon!
